Sustainable packaging trends for 2013

The trend for sustainable packaging has continues to grow in the past year. Marcus Hill, founder and managing director of London Bio Packaging says bioplastics will play a significant role in 2013.

In 2012, bioplastics played an important part in the sustainability strategies of many companies and these materials are set to be more common in 2013. The largest growth is predicted to be the bio-based, non-biodegradable bioplastics group PE and PET. Biodegradable plastics, such as PLA and PHA are also anticipated to grow considerably by 2016; these plastics will give companies the best environmental benefits.

Hill believes sustainability is also on the rise because it can drastically impact a business’ bottom line. The model sustainability strategy would take into account the environmental impact of processes across the entire product lifecycle, from raw material to how it’s transported to if it’s recycled or composted. Companies can also measure their own internal environmental impact and set goals to become more sustainable.
